The fragrant sagebrush on
the mesa above the canyon rim contrasts sharply with the lush
vegetation along the Rio Pueblo. Those hardy enough to hike down
can enjoy a whole different world inside the canyon. (Bring your
fishing gear or maybe a sketchpad or a picnic!)
Additional open space is
all around Barranca del Pueblo. The land on the opposite wall of
the canyon and the mesa beyond is owned by Taos Pueblo and is
completely untouched. Within walking distance to the southwest
of Barranca del Pueblo are thousands of acres of land
available for
public recreation. Farther beyond (10 to 15 miles), on three
sides of this site is
Carson
National Forest land. Carson National Forest offers dozens
of recreational opportunities, including, for example, a fabulous
16-mile round-trip hike from Taos Ski Valley to the highest peak in
New Mexico, Wheeler Peak (13, 161 feet).
And, speaking of
recreation, don't forget that the Taos Country Club Golf Course is
five minutes away from Barranca del Pueblo.
